Nosnippet is an HTML attribute that tells search engines not to show any content snippet from a webpage in search results.
When applied, it will prevent search engines like Google from showing text snippets, including meta descriptions in the SERPs.
This tag can be applied to an entire page to control content visibility in search results.
Why is this important?
Google is continuously improving the search engine results pages (SERPs).
Part of that involves pulling snippets of information from websites and displaying them in the SERPs.
This does two things:
Here’s the problem:
You have very limited control over what information is displayed in the SERPs and when it is shown.
Nosnippet meta tags give you that control back. You decide which pages are allowed to be used for snippet information.
TIP: Use data-nosnippet and max-snippet tags for better control of how content from your website is used as snippets.
What Will I Learn?
The nosnippet rule is a directive to search engines like Google that prevents them from generating snippets from your pages.
Adding the nosnippet meta tag to a page’s HTML head section instructs Google not to use content from that page.
Why would you do that?
Here are some of the benefits:
The truth is that Google is pretty good at getting snippet information right.
And getting a featured snippet is beneficial for improving your website visibility and increasing organic traffic.
But the nosnippet tag gives you more control.
You can choose how your content is used and if you want it displayed as a snippet in the SERPs.
The difference between nosnippet and data-nosnippet is that nosnippet is applied at the page level, whereas data-nosnippet is applied to specific text elements on the page.
Here’s what I mean:
Both nosnippet and data-nosnippet meta tags prevent search engines from using text as snippets in the organic search results.
But nosnippet tags prevent Google from using any text on a page for snippets.
In other words: Data-nosnippet tags prevent Google from using specific (tagged) sections of text.
To use a nosnippet, you simply add the nosnippet meta tag to the head section of your page.
It should look like this:
<meta name=”robots” content=”nosnippet”>
Remember:
Using a nosnippet tag will affect how your website is displayed in the search results. Make sure you think about it strategically before adding the tag.
