What Does SEO Stand For?

SEO means Search Engine Optimization. It involves optimizing a website’s content, technical setup and link popularity to make it more discoverable and relevant to user search queries.

This will improve the website’s ranking on search engines like Google, Bing and others, increase its visibility and traffic.

Think of it like this:

Search engine optimisation is the process of optimising your website to appear in search engines like Google and Bing. This is the search engine part of the SEO acronym.

The optimisation part relates to actually doing the work to rank your website higher in search engines.

The job of an SEO agency is to assist their clients in making their website as visible as possible for specific search phrases called keywords.

The core focus is increasing visibility which has lots of benefits for your business like making more sales.

Why Does Your Online Business Need SEO?

SEO offers a lot of value for your business – in more ways than you think.

People will search online when:

    • They want to learn more about a topic
    • Have a problem to solve
    • Learning something new
    • Looking to buy a product or service

This gives you an opportunity to be found by the people making these searches. Here are three huge reasons why you want that.

SEO Helps You Rank Your Website In The Search Engines

Visibility is important for business growth.

If people don’t know your business exists, it can stagnate your growth.

Optimising your site and ranking in the top spots of the search results puts you directly in front of your ideal customer. When people search in Google for keywords related to your products or services – they find you.

Who doesn’t want their customers to come to them, right?

seo traffic growth

The more your ideal customers see your website in the search results, the more they’ll associate your business as the solution.

In their minds, you become the authority and trusted person in your industry.

SEO Helps You Generate Qualified Search Traffic

Think about it:

The best time to reach potential customers is when they are actively looking for products and services that you offer.

This leads to an influx of qualified traffic directly to your site.

More qualified search traffic = Ready to buy leads.

search traffic

That’s the goal of SEO. The more of the right people you get looking at your business the more leads you can acquire.

SEO is one of the best marketing channels for driving qualified traffic to your website.

SEO Helps You Increase Conversion Rates, Sales And Revenue

What’s the ultimate goal of any business?

To generate profit.

Generating profit

That means you need to invest in marketing that consistently brings a high ROI. You want long term strategies that move your business forward.

60% of marketers say that their best leads came directly from organic search. SEO brings the right kinds of customers to your front door.

It just makes sense:

If you have high-quality traffic consistently visiting your website, the natural result will be a significant increase in:

    • Conversion rates
    • Sales

A higher conversion rate means you are paying less to acquire more customers.

SEO is one of the best investments you can make to grow your business and make more money in the long run.

How To Optimise Your Site For SEO Step-by-Step.

If you want to improve the optimisation of your website – pay attention to this next section, because I’ll show you 5 steps you need to follow to achieve high rankings.

1. Include Keywords To Your Content

All searches start with words being typed into a search engine like Google.

These words are called keywords.

How do keywords work

Keywords can be broken into 2 groups:

  1. Commercial – Searcher who wants to purchase.
  2. Informational – Searcher who wants to learn.

You first need to decide which keywords your ideal customers are using to find products or services that you offer. Once you know those keywords, you can start optimising your website for them.

To choose your target keywords you need to do quality keyword research.

You can use my intelligent keyword research template to put together a list of valuable keywords to target.

Next you want to optimise your content with them for your new target keywords. You need to place your primary keyword in the:

    • Main heading of your page
    • Subheadings on your page
    • Written content
    • URL
    • Meta title and description

Word of warning:

Don’t “over optimise” your content by including your keyword too many times. This is called keyword stuffing. And Google is on the hunt for website owners who keyword stuff and will deal out hard penalties if they find you guilty of it.

As a general rule, only use the keyword when it sounds natural and is in context with what you are writing.

WARNING: Do not confuse meta description with meta keywords.

2. Improve Your Page Speed

Page speed has become one of the most important confirmed Google ranking factors.

Why?

Google only ranks websites that provide a good experience for their users. Fast loading websites are a big part of a good user experience.

To test your current website loading speeds, use the Google PageSpeed tool.

Your goal is to get a perfect Google PageSpeed Score so that your website loads at lightning speeds for all of your visitors.

Here’s how to do that:

    • Compress website files – Reduces the size of the CSS, HTML, JavaScript, images and other files impacting speed
    • Minify code – Remove unused code, white spaces and unnecessary elements.
    • Reduce redirects – Reduce long redirect chains.
    • Deliver content locally – Use a content delivery network (CDN).

Sounds like a lot of work?

It doesn’t have to be. There is one super powerful tool that I use to optimise the speed of my own website.

It’s called NitroPack.

3. Optimise Your Unique Content

At the heart of SEO is unique content.

Google loves fresh unique content. You need to produce engaging content that visitors can’t help but read and unique content that Google wants to show their users.

But just creating unique content is not enough. You also need to optimise to ensure it ranks as high as possible so people can actually find it.

Manually optimising your content by following online guides and tutorials will probably take you a couple of hours per piece of content.

Thankfully you can automatically optimise your content using Surfer SEO.

4. Take Care Of Your On-Page SEO

On-page SEO is an underrated part of SEO.

People overlook just how important it is for ranking high in the SERPs. On-page SEO really just means making sure that all of your website’s page elements are optimised for Google.

If you don’t do a good job with on-page SEO – your website won’t be ranking anywhere.

There are 27 key on-page SEO factors that will affect your rankings. You can work through this on-page SEO checklist to make sure that you cover them all.

But I am going to let you in on a little secret…

…Not all SEO factors are created equal. In fact, there are 5 really important SEO factors that hold more weight in the eyes of Google.

top five onpage seo factors

Those top 5 on-page SEO factors are:

  1. Mobile responsive: Make sure you have a fully responsive mobile version of your website.
  2. Website speed: Ensure your site loads fast and efficiently for visitors.
  3. Keyword in your title tag: Add your target keyword into your headline – ideally at the beginning of it.
  4. Internal linking: Link to other relevant web pages of your site.
  5. Content length: Cover each topic you write about comprehensively.

If nothing else – make sure that you have all of those 5 factors sorted.

This will give a nice boost to your rankings.

5. Build Authority Links

Link building is considered the Mecca of SEO.

It’s also one of the most complex parts of SEO to do.

Link building is when you reach out to another website owner and ask them to link from their website to yours. Google takes each of these links very seriously.

Here’s why:

Google considers links pointing from someone’s website to your website like an endorsement. In essence, the person linking to you says that they like and trust your website.

The more links (endorsements) you get, the more trust and authority you build with Google. When Google trusts you and views you as an authority you will find your rankings skyrocket.

link building

But that doesn’t mean you should go out and build as many links as you can.

Google doesn’t value each link on the same level.

Fewer links from relevant high-authority websites will impact your rankings more than lots of links from small low authority websites. When it comes to building links – it’s the quality that matters.

Use any of these 15 link building strategies to build powerful links that move your rankings forward. Don’t have time to build links?

Use a trustworthy link building service like LinksThatRank to build them for you.
