Here’s how to do it:

Login to Ahrefs, click “Site Explorer” and enter your target website’s URL.

Click “Search”.

Look at the website’s Domain Rating (DR) score.

This shows the overall strength of the link profile.

Next, you want to check the website’s link velocity. This is the number of links that the site acquires each month.

To do that, click on the “Backlink Profile” tab in Site Explorer.

Large spikes or drops in link velocity can be a negative signal for the overall strength of the link profile.

What you’re you’re looking for is consistent growth.

Now, it’s time to dig a bit deeper…

Click on the “Backlinks” report.

This will bring up a complete list of every backlink in the website’s link profile.

You want to look at-

  • Link types (dofollow vs nofollow)
  • Anchor text types
  • Link placement on pages
  • Types of linked websites
  • How the site is acquiring those links

This will give you a complete and in-depth overview of the website’s entire link profile. You’ll also be able to see the quality of the linking sites and how each link is being acquired.

  • If they wrote a guest post: reach out to the site and pitch a guest post.
  • If they got mentioned as a source: contact the site and become a source too.
  • If they got a link insert: get yourself a link insert using the same approach.

You get the point!

The reason this works so well is because if the website linked to your competitor, they will likely link to you.
